surah

Name

Its name is Al-Talaq, in reference to the occurrence of the word "talaq" at her beginning, and it has been said that she is called Surah Al-Nisa' Minor because it refers to the provisions of divorce.

Period of Revelation

It was revealed to the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - after moving to Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, as it is one of the civil Suras.
There are several narrations in Surat Al-Talaq about the reasons for its revelation, namely: The Messenger of God, God's prayer and peace be upon him, divorced Hafsa, the daughter of Omar...

And it was said that it was revealed about Ibn Omar Ibn Al-Khattab - may God be pleased with him - because he divorced his wife while she was menstruating during the time of the Messenger of God - God's prayers and peace be upon him.

Theme and topics

The sura talks about divorce as a subject in which it is very difficult to avoid transgressing God's boundaries unless the parties commit to fear God and observe Him, because in divorce, enmities, rumors, psychological, material and moral matters, worldly interests and great responsibilities accumulate, requiring financial sacrifices and requiring patience, deliberation, constant piety towards God, trust and control. The surah uses the theme of divorce to facilitate understanding of its purpose in terms of faith, piety, and following God's commandments by linking it to the creation of the heavens and the earth and sending down the command between them so that they may know that God is the Creator, the Almighty, who encompasses all knowledge so that they may fear Him and obey His command.
