Name

Surah Al-Qalam was so named because it begins with the oath with the pen, indicating the glorification and honor of the pen and its great utility in writing.

Period of Revelation

It is considered one of the first suras to be revealed, because Ibn Abbas - may God be pleased with him - said that it was the first sura to be revealed after Surat Al-Alaq, then Surat Al-Muzzammil was revealed, then Surat Al-Muddaththir, while some scholars assumed that it was the fourth sura to be revealed after Surat Al-Alaq, then Surat Al-Muddaththir. Then Surat Al-Muzzammil.
The Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace - was accused of madness when the Quraish heard about the incident of Gabriel - peace be upon him - descending upon the Messenger of God in the cave of Hira, and also when he proclaimed the call and Islam aloud. Thus, Surah Al-Qalam was revealed to him, which confirmed him - God bless him and grant him peace - and rejected this false accusation against him - God bless him and grant him peace - and praised his noble morals and qualities, for the Surah was to threaten the disbelievers and warn them of destruction and torment.

Theme and topics

Several topics are discussed in Surat Al-Qalam, including the following:
The refutation of the false complaint in which the polytheists accused the Messenger of God - God's prayer and peace be upon him - of being insane.
The explanation and announcement of the challenge of the polytheists to provide an example for the Holy Quran, because this explanation is the first one mentioned in the Holy Quran.

Speaking about the honorable morals that distinguish and confirm and reassure the Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace.
The Messenger of God - may God's prayers and peace be upon him - warned against complimenting the polytheists and approving their proposals, which contain nothing but malice and intrigue.

He spoke about the believers and the polytheists and the fate of each of them on the Day of Resurrection.
