Name

The predecessors called it Surah Al-Anbiya, in Sahih Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Abdullah bin Masoud, may God be pleased with him, who said, "The Children of Israel - Israa -, Al-Kahf, Mary, Taha, and the Prophets are among the first deliverers." The reason for this naming is that the names of sixteen Prophets and Maryam are mentioned in it, and this number of prophets' names was not mentioned in any of the Surahs of the Qur'an, except in Surat Al-An'am, in which eighteen prophets were mentioned. Ibn Ashour said, "If this Surah (Al-Anbiya) was revealed before the Surah (Al-An'am), then it preceded the naming in addition to the Prophets, otherwise the specialization of the Surah (Al-An'am) to mention the provisions of Al-An'am required the naming with that name, so the Surah Al-Anbiya was more worthy than the rest of the Surahs of the Qur'an with that name, although one of the Muslim facts is that the face of the naming does not require it.

Period of Revelation
Surah Al-Anbiya is considered one of the Meccan surahs, that is, one of the suras that was revealed to the Prophet - may blessings and peace be upon him - in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and it was revealed after Surah Ibrahim.
Scholars have given many reasons for which Surah Al-Anbiya was revealed, and we will mention some of them below:

When the people of Mecca were distracted from this worldly life and turned away from the Hereafter, Surah Al-Anbiya was revealed to warn them of the approaching end of the Hour and the severity of the reckoning on the Day of Resurrection.
When the enmity of the disbelievers of Quraysh against the Messenger -peace and blessings be upon him- and his companions increased, this Surah was sent down to make it clear to the Messenger and his companions that this is the religion of the disbelievers, which means denial, enmity and mockery.
I explained to the Messenger -peace and blessings upon him- that the reason for the denial of the polytheists is the prophecy of our Lord Muhammad -peace and blessings upon him- and his inability to perform a physical miracle like the prophets before him.
This sura is to prove the unity of God - the Almighty - and to give an example that if there were more than one God, the heavens and the earth would be corrupted.
