Name

Surah Al-Shams was so named because it begins with the oath of the sun, which is the largest celestial body that has ever existed. It is a fixed giant star connected to it, and all the planets and celestial bodies revolve around it, and it is considered one of the signs of the power of God Almighty.

Period of Revelation

Surat Al-Shams is one of the suras revealed in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and Surat Al-Shams has fifteen verses. And the incident of Isra and Mi'raj that happened with the Prophet, peace be upon him, so Surah Al-Shams was also revealed at that time.

Theme and topics

The purpose of Surat Al-Shams revolves around speaking about the great signs of God in this vast universe. Thus, the Surat Al-Shams begins with a great oath of God Almighty with the sun and its light, then with the moon at night, then with the day, then with the night, then with the heavens and the earth, for all these things are signs of the marvellous creation of God Almighty, and despite all the knowledge he has attained and the civilization he has built, man is still unable to reach their hidden secrets.
