History of surah The Star

Name

Surat Al-Najm was so named because “Al-Najm” which mean the star is mentioned in it and it begins with an oath by the star, which is a great thing because God only swears by great things, and it was so named “Al-Najm”  as the first verse of it begins.

Period of Revelation

This sura belongs to the Meccan suras, i.e., the one revealed to our master Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, before emigrating from the city of Mecca. The number of its verses is sixty-two.
It was revealed after the revelation of Surat Al-Ikhlas and, according to the Companion Ibn Masoud, it is considered the first surah to be publicly proclaimed before the polytheists in Mecca (it is the first surah proclaimed in Mecca by the Messenger of God, blessings and peace be upon him).
One of the most important reasons for the revelation of Surat Al-Najm is that the polytheists said that the Messenger, God's prayers and peace be upon him, is the one who is familiar with the verses of the noble Quran, and accused him of being either a poet or a madman, so God Almighty revealed this noble Surah to prove to them that the noble Quran is from God and that He sends it down to His Prophet through revelation.

Theme and topics

In Surat Al-Najm, many goals are addressed, including:

God Almighty swore by the star at the beginning of the Surah to confirm the sincerity of the message that Muhammad - may God bless him and grant him peace - delivered.

This Holy Quran is the word of God Almighty and not, as the disbelievers of the Quraish claim, the words of the Prophet - God's prayer and peace be upon him.

The proof that the Prophet -God bless him and grant him peace- saw Gabriel -peace be upon him-؛ is doubly true.
He denounces the polytheists because they worship idols that bring neither harm nor benefit. And they are the ones who created these idols and gave them names.

The proof of the Day of Resurrection and that God - praised be He - will hold people accountable for their deeds.

Warning against speaking about claims that have no basis, because false claims do not change the origin of the truth that the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - brought
